Alarming Statistics Involving Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents in the State of Florida are not uncommon. Florida’s warm weather and vast roadways lend itself to riding a motorcycle, but unfortunately with increased riding opportunities comes an increased chance of an accident.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Administration, eleven (11) percent of all roadway accidents that occur in the United States involve motorcycles. Further the same data confirms that motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than those in passenger cars.

A 2009 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute report found that more than half of motorcyclist deaths involved at least one other vehicle and 42 percent of two-vehicle fatal motorcycle crashes involved a vehicle turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle.

The above statistics are disturbing and underscore the significance in the review process of a motorcycle case. When analyzing motorcycle accident cases there are a litany of factors that can contribute to the accident. Some factors include weather conditions, lane splitting, traffic conditions, speed limitations, and vehicle defects. All of the factors above can have a major impact on a plaintiff’s case.
